The Minister for Home Affairs says the Island’s prison is only 13 spaces away from capacity.
Isle of Man Prison can hold up to 144 prisoners and has seen 40 new offenders locked up in the last 12 months.
Speaking in Tynwald, Jane Poole-Wilson said the UK prison system was also at breaking point due to overcrowding.
The Minister said some inmates on the Island could be given early release in some cases:
