Privacy Policy
Last updated: 29 October 2026
This privacy policy explains how Manx.News (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses and protects personal information when you visit manx.news, use the Manx.News app or subscribe to our email newsletters.
Who we are
Manx.News is operated by Energy Media UK Ltd. Energy Media UK Ltd is a company registered in England and Wales and is the data controller for personal data collected through our website, app and newsletters. We process personal data in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).

What information we collect
Information you give us
- Contact form and emails: your name, email address, subject and message, including any news tips or enquiries you send us.
- Newsletter sign-up: your email address, your first name (optional) and which newsletters you choose (daily, weekly or both). When you confirm your subscription, the date, time and IP address are recorded as a record of your consent.
Information collected automatically
- Usage data: pages viewed, time spent on the site, referring websites, browser and device type, and approximate location based on your IP address.
- Cookies and similar technologies: see “Cookies, analytics and advertising” below.
- Newsletter activity: our newsletters contain a small tracking image and tracked links, so we can see whether an email was opened, which links were clicked, and the approximate location and type of device used.
- Newsletter adverts: advert images in our newsletters are loaded from our website when you open the email, and clicks on newsletter adverts pass through our website on the way to the advertiser. Our web server records standard technical information for these requests, such as IP address, device type and time.
- Spam protection: when you use our newsletter sign-up form, your IP address is held for up to 10 minutes to block repeated sign-up attempts.
App users
- Account: you do not need to create an account or give us your name to use the app.
- Device and usage information: when the app loads news from our website, our server receives standard technical information such as your IP address, device type and operating system version.
- Push notifications: if you turn on notifications, we store a device token so we can send you news alerts. It does not identify you by name. Notifications are delivered through Apple’s and Google’s push notification services. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
- Advertising identifier: the app shows adverts provided by Google. With your permission, Google may use your device’s advertising identifier to show personalised adverts and measure their performance. On iPhone and iPad you will be asked whether to allow tracking, and you can change this at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. On Android you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings. If you do not allow tracking, you will still see adverts, but they will not be personalised.
How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- run, maintain and improve the website, app and newsletters
- respond to messages, news tips and enquiries
- send the newsletters you have chosen and the notifications you have asked for
- understand which stories and newsletter content readers find most useful
- display advertising on our website, app and newsletters, which helps fund our free news service
- give advertisers overall figures, such as how many times an advert was shown or clicked
- understand how readers use the site, using aggregated statistics
- keep our services secure and prevent spam and abuse
Our legal basis for using your information
- Consent: for analytics and advertising cookies, personalised adverts in the app, our newsletters (including open and click tracking) and push notifications. You can withdraw your consent at any time.
- Legitimate interests: to run, secure and improve our services, to protect our forms from spam and to respond to enquiries.
- Legal obligation: where we must keep or disclose information by law.
Cookies, analytics and advertising
We use cookies, which are small text files stored on your device. Some are essential for the site to work. Others help us understand how the site is used or show advertising.
Google Analytics: we use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our site, such as which pages are visited and for how long. Google processes this information on our behalf. You can opt out using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Advertising: Manx.News displays advertising provided by Google on our website and app. Google and its partners may use cookies, or your device’s advertising identifier in the app, to show adverts based on your previous visits to this and other websites and apps. To learn how Google uses information from sites and apps that use its services, see policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can manage or turn off personalised adverts at myadcenter.google.com.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, although parts of the site may not work properly as a result.
Email newsletters
We offer two free email newsletters, The Daily Briefing and The Week on the Island. Both are put together automatically from the most-read stories on manx.news.
- We send our newsletters using Mailchimp, a service provided by Intuit Inc. Your sign-up details are held in our Mailchimp account and are used only to send you the newsletters you have chosen. You can read Mailchimp’s privacy information at mailchimp.com/legal.
- We use double opt-in: you will only receive newsletters after you click the link in our confirmation email.
- Every newsletter has links to update your preferences, for example to switch between daily and weekly, or to unsubscribe. Unsubscribing takes effect straight away.
- Our newsletters may include adverts. We never share your name or email address with advertisers; they only receive overall figures, such as how many times their advert was shown or clicked.
- If you would prefer us not to know when you open a newsletter, you can turn off automatic image loading in your email app.
Embedded content and audio players
Our website and app may include embedded content, such as videos, social media posts and our live radio players for Energy FM and Sound Radio. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the provider’s own website. Those providers may collect data about you, use cookies and track your interaction with the content, under their own privacy policies.
Social media
We share our news articles on social media platforms, including Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube. If you interact with us on those platforms, your information is handled under that platform’s own privacy policy.
Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with:
- Service providers who help us run our website, app and newsletters, including our web hosting provider, Google (analytics and advertising), Mailchimp (newsletters) and Apple and Google (app distribution and push notifications). They may only use it on our instructions or as described in their own privacy policies for the services they provide.
- Our associated radio services, where a news tip or enquiry relates to their broadcasts.
- Authorities, where required by law or to protect our rights or the safety of others.
We do not share subscribers’ or readers’ personal details with advertisers.
Some of our service providers, including Google and Mailchimp (Intuit), may process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where this happens, appropriate safeguards are in place, such as the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses.
News tips and confidentiality
If you send us a news tip, we will treat your identity as confidential. We will not publish your details without your agreement, unless the law requires us to.
How long we keep your information
- Contact form messages and tips: up to 2 years, unless they are needed for an ongoing story or a legal reason.
- Newsletter subscriber details and activity: while you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep your email address on a suppression list so that we do not email you again by mistake.
- Sign-up spam protection: IP addresses are held for up to 10 minutes.
- Analytics data: in line with our Google Analytics retention settings.
- Web server logs (including newsletter advert requests): in line with our hosting provider’s standard log retention.
- App device tokens: until you turn off notifications or uninstall the app.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you
- have inaccurate data corrected
- have your data deleted
- restrict or object to how we use your data
- receive your data in a portable format
- withdraw your consent at any time
To use any of these rights, email newsdesk@manx.news or write to us at the address above. We will respond within one month.
You can also manage some choices yourself at any time: use the unsubscribe or update preferences links in any newsletter, turn off push notifications in your device settings, and change app tracking permissions in your device’s privacy settings.
Some rights may be limited where we process information for journalistic purposes, as allowed under data protection law.
We do not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please contact us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or by calling 0303 123 1113.
Children
Our website, app and newsletters are not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information. These include secure (HTTPS) connections, security software and restricted access. However, no online service can be completely secure.
Links to other websites
Our articles, app and newsletters may link to other websites, including advertisers’ websites. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices.

We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date.
