A Tynwald committee has been told that 9/10 of the world’s fastest declining jobs play a big role in the Manx economy.
Carol Glover told the Economic Policy Review Committee that how the island responds to this will be a big challenge for our economy.
Mrs Glover said that this would impact both private and public sector roles and highlights the importance of providing opportunities for people to learn new skills.
She said: “The 10 fastest declining jobs in the world now this very minute are, in business American jargon, bank tellers, postal clerks, cashiers and ticket clerks, data entry clerks, administrative and executive secretaries, material recording and stock keeping clerks, accounting, book keeping and payroll clerks, legislators and officials, statistical finance and insurance, cars and door to door sales workers.
“So nine out of 10 of the fastest declining jobs are in the Isle of Man, and actually in the sectors that we currently have in quite a big way, including the public sector.”
Upskill
The Chamber of Commerce’s vice-president for strategy said this is going to “free up a lot of labour in the next five years”.
Mrs Glover added that the island will need to work out “what we’re going to do with that labor and how we’re going to upskill it and develop the mindset and skill set of the people”.
Asked if this means the government needs to “pivot” its economic strategy, Mrs Glover said she personally believes it does.
