Manx Care is introducing new targeted drug therapies for the management of the several long-term health conditions.
The drug therapies will help those suffering with:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Psoriatic Arthritis
- Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Non-radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Crohn’s Disease
- Psoriasis
The drug therapies have been recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
Drug Therapies
NICE guidance makes recommendations on the use of newly developed medicines and other treatments, such as medical devices.
These recommendations are based on research and drug trial data, including information around cost effectiveness.
Whilst implementation of these recommendations is not currently a legal requirement here in the Isle of Man, Manx Care is committed to reviewing these developments as they are introduced in the UK, and where possible (within current funding and resources) following the same guidance in its service reviews.
Cost Effectiveness
The therapies for the above conditions have been adopted by Manx Care in line with the Department of Health and Social Care’s Mandate 2024/25.
The introduction of these medications will have the same cost or are cost saving compared to current drug treatments being offered.
Some of the therapies include monoclonal antibodies (MABs) and other similar targeting drug therapies that are designed to treat autoimmune conditions.
This development provides a wider choice of treatment options for clinicians, particularly if current therapies become ineffective or are causing adverse side effects.
Manx Care continues to work on the launch of NICE-recommended therapies for other clinical conditions.
It is investigating current gaps, and where pathways of care can be identified, “will progress them through service development and financial processes”.
