The Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority has confirmed that no one will be switched off from the copper network until a suitable alternative is available.
The assurance came during Keys questions on the planned 2029 fibre transition, prompted by concerns over vulnerable consumers.
Lawrie Hooper MHK questioned whether CURA had guaranteed uninterrupted broadband access.
Ann Corlett MHK, representing the regulator, replied: “The authority has clearly and consistently stated that those using current copper-based services will not be disconnected or switched off from the copper network until a solution that meets their needs is available.”
Concerns
Mr Hooper highlighted worries from residents who had received notices from Manx Telecom urging them to switch to fibre within 12 months.
“They are put off from switching because of the slightly higher cost, perhaps, of fibre itself, but also the higher connection cost,” he said.
Mrs Corlett outlined support measures, including direct communication with affected households.
“The authority is writing to every individual household that will be impacted by the switch-off when it begins in their area,” she said, adding that a database would track those needing extra assistance.
The transition, governed by the Communications Act 2021, aims to balance consumer protection with telecoms innovation.
