A working group established to implement the island’s new approach to drug-related harms is preparing to deliver its findings.
The development follows Tynwald’s November 2024 approval of a more health-focused strategy to address substance misuse.
The update came in response to questioning by Douglas East MHK Joney Faragher, who sought clarity on implementation timelines.
Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Mrs Poole-Wilson confirmed the Community Safety Partnership had convened the working group in February 2025, bringing together government agencies and third-sector organisations.
“The group has met monthly and, in accordance with the Island Plan milestone, will shortly complete its report to the Community Safety Partnership on its review of the practical application,” Mrs Poole-Wilson said.
While the minister didn’t specify exact timelines, she noted decisions would follow the partnership’s review of the report. The government’s annual report will then provide further updates.
The Isle of Man’s policy shift mirrors wider trends in the British Isles, where jurisdictions are increasingly adopting public health approaches to drug use.
Neighbouring jurisdictions like Jersey and Guernsey have implemented similar reforms in recent years.
