Anyone planning to commercially import a dog from Romania into the Isle of Man must follow new rules taking effect from today.
The new rules mean potential owners must ensure their animal is tested for Brucella canis — a bacterium that causes an infectious disease in dogs, within 30 days of arrival.
This aligns with new UK requirements and is designed to help protect both animal and human health.
New Rules
The rules apply to dogs imported for sale, rehoming or transfer of ownership, and to anyone travelling with more than five dogs, unless attending shows, competitions or training events.
Chief Vet Dr Amy Beckett said: “The new rules are a necessary step to safeguard both animal and human health. Anyone considering getting a dog should make sure they are fully prepared for the responsibility.
“Importing dogs without the proper health checks or testing can increase the risk of introducing serious diseases like Brucella canis into the Isle of Man.”
