Chief Minister Alf Cannan has defended the creation of a National AI Office, saying it is an essential and responsible move for the Isle of Man’s future.
The office aims to coordinate the use of artificial intelligence across government and the economy.
It follows a refresh of the Island’s economic strategy, with industry workshops emphasising the need for better workforce data, digital connectivity, and energy security.
Mr Cannan said the office “provides a single national function to coordinate the use and adoption of AI across government and the wider economy,” building on existing free AI training programmes.
In Tynwald, MHK Lawrie Hooper questioned the office’s remit and a £1 million allocation, asking: “Can you just confirm that they have dropped the idea of regulating AI on the island?” and what the full budget will be.
Mr Cannan replied that the funding would be detailed in the budget and was available for “clear programmes or investment”.
He argued that “it would be irresponsible not to have made this move,” noting the office reconfigures existing resources to understand technological opportunities and risks alongside businesses and the community.
