A former Member of the House of Keys has accused the Chief Minister of belittling Tynwald.
In an open letter to the Chief Minister, copied to all Tynwald members and the media, Quintin Gill said his actions “warrant” public concern.
The letter focuses on the Assisted Dying Bill but singles out two examples of the Chief Minister’s behaviour which Mr Gill called “inappropriate and unworthy of any Chief Minister”.
Mr Gill cited Hansard records where the Chief Minister described elected colleagues as “third rate parliamentarians” promoting “third-rate legislation”.
Mr Gill wrote: “To demean Tynwald as a body harms the rights and interests of the Isle of Man.”
He also alleged the Chief Minister unilaterally contacted the UK government to request amendments to legislation regarding Manx assisted dying laws, without reference to Council of Ministers colleagues.
Mr Gill added: “If you have failed the COMIN duty of ‘Collective Responsibility’ and open respectful candour, then you should offer a public apology to your ministerial and parliamentary colleagues.”
He offered to apologise if his understanding is proved incorrect, calling for “full and candid evidence” of all communications.
