Old Laxey Hill to be Closed to Allow for Demolition

Old Laxey Hill will be closed to vehicles for four weeks from next Monday to allow the emergency demolition of a building

Garff Commissioners say the closure will run from September 28 to October 26, to allow the demolition of Cliffmount, one of two buildings evacuated following a landslide in 2023.

A spokesperson said: “Following ground movement affecting the property and the slope below, independent structural and geotechnical engineers have advised that the building needs to be demolished in a controlled manner to make the site safe.”

It means the road will be closed to through traffic around Cliffmount. and diversion routes will be signposted.

Works will take place Monday-Saturday, 8am-5pm.

“The road may be reopened earlier if engineers confirm that it is safe to do so,” said the spokesperson..

“Pedestrian access will be maintained for essential residential access, managed by the site team. Residents should make themselves known to the site manager or banksman and follow their instructions.

“Vehicle access will not be possible through the closure, so residents are asked to plan journeys using the signed diversion and, where possible, park outside the closure area.”

The upper and lower footpaths adjacent to the site will also be closed for safety, with diversion signage in place. Bus Vannin has been notified and will advise of any changes to local services.

The spokesperson added: “The works are being undertaken as essential safety works, and efforts will be made to minimise noise, dust and vibration.

“Residents with specific access requirements, including carers, deliveries, mobility needs or medical appointments, are asked to contact the site team in advance so arrangements can be made.”

All businesses are still open and will be operating as normal.

The spokesperson said: “We appreciate that this will cause some disruption and thank residents for their patience and cooperation while these essential safety works are carried out.”
