Youngsters Represent Island at World Robot Olympiad

Two young members of Code Club Isle of Man will travel to California this week to represent the island at an international World Robot Olympiad event.

Scott and Robert, competing as Manx Matrix, will take part in the WRO Open Championship Americas in Ontario from today (September 25) until Sunday (September 27).

Their selection caps a standout year for the Island’s robotics programme. Two further Code Club teams are also preparing to compete at another WRO international event in Croatia next month.

Competition Pathway

Manx Matrix earned its place after progressing through the UK competition pathway, first at the regional finals in Edinburgh in June, then at the UK National Finals in Leicester in July, where their performance secured qualification for California.

The pair have spent months developing and refining their robot to meet increasingly demanding challenges.

Their trip has been supported by Rotary Club, Agilitas and Capital International, whose sponsorship has helped cover the costs of sending young Manx competitors overseas.

Code Club founder Owen Cutajar said the team’s achievement reflects both their commitment and the strength of the Island’s growing robotics community. He added that having three Manx teams reach international WRO events in the same year is “something we are extremely proud of”.

World Robot Olympiad challenges young people to design, build and programme robots while developing engineering, problem‑solving and teamwork skills.

For Scott and Robert, the California event will also offer the chance to meet teams from around the world and experience robotics at an international level.

Manx Matrix will compete in California this weekend, with two further Code Club teams travelling to Croatia in October.
