Today is the Day MHKs Choose a New Chief Minister

Today is the day MHKs get to choose the island’s next Chief Minister.

It is the first sitting of the House of Keys since the election. But technically, there is no actual guarantee of a result in terms of appointing a Chief Minister.

If neither of the candidates – Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Kirrie Jenkins and Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas – can achieve the magic number of 13 in a confirmatory vote, then the Keys will adjourn and fresh nominations will be sought.

That could still take place later today (October 13) or tomorrow. Others who still hold leadership ambitions may be watching in the wings.

The sitting starts at 10am and is due to follow a pattern of opening statements from candidates, a question session with the MHKs, closing statements and then voting.

Until a decision is made, Alfred Cannan remains Chief Minister.
