Manx Utilities is set to begin work next month on improvements to the Combined Sewer Overflow at Gansey as part of a wider programme to modernise overflow infrastructure across the island.
The project will see the existing overflow chamber near the junction of Beach Road and the coastal footpath enlarged to accommodate a new screening system and telemetry equipment.
According to Manx Utilities, the new screen will significantly reduce the discharge of solids and sewage debris during storm overflow events, while the telemetry system will provide more detailed information on how often and for how long the overflow operates.
Combined Sewer Overflows act as relief points during periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall, helping to prevent wastewater backing up through the sewer network and causing flooding to homes, businesses and roads.
Tim Woakes, Executive Director for Wastewater, said the improvements would help reduce the environmental impact of overflow discharges while providing better data on the performance of the drainage network during storm events.
Construction is due to begin on November 2. Beach Road will be closed to through traffic until 30 November while excavation works are carried out, with a full road closure required for safety reasons.
Remaining works will continue under traffic management arrangements until the project is completed in February 2027.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.
