Preparations for the 2029 Island Games are gathering pace, with officials confirming that funding is in place and work is already underway on key infrastructure.
The DESC has secured £2.5 million to deliver the Games, with an additional £2.6 million allocated for capital works. Refurbishment of the athletics track grandstand at the National Sports Centre has already begun.
Chief Officer Graham Kinrade told the Social Affairs Policy Review Committee that time is pressing.
“2029 sounds like it’s a long way away, doesn’t it? It absolutely isn’t. It’ll soon be here,” he said.

Organising Committee meetings are taking place, bringing together senior officers from multiple government departments.
Mr Kinrade acknowledged that scheduling the required works will require careful planning to minimise disruption for local athletes who continue to train.
“That will be part of your planning as you schedule, whether it’s going to be grandstand, running track and pitch, or whichever way we do that part of the scheduling is saying who’s using it at the time,” he said.
“We’re going to have to take the service down whilst we refit. And then where can we accommodate those? That will all be part of the planning phase.”
