Renewables ‘should not be pursued at any cost’

Tynwald is to debate the way the island is shifting towards renewable energy.

Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse has tabled a motion for next week’s May sitting.

The motion states that Tynwald believes changing the energy balance “can be achieved, but should be done without a negative environmental impact and should embrace affordable and appropriate mechanisms”.

Mr Moorhouse’s motion states that while renewables “have a role in the island’s future, it should not be pursued at any cost”.

The motion insists any transition must protect the environment, respect local communities and represent “genuine value for money”.

It follows growing debate over major renewable projects on the Isle of Man, including onshore wind developments and interconnector proposals.
