A community event in Douglas attracted around 40 residents keen to find out about a free app that can help to trace and track pollution in seas and along coastlines.
Marius Suteu, Chief Technology Officer at Eyesea, gave a presentation about the Eyesea app at an evening organised by the Isle of Man branch of IMarEST (Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology) at The Legion Hall, Market Street.
Eyesea is a non-profit organisation with a mission to chart global pollution and maritime hazards.
Eyesea app
Its app allows anyone to upload photos of waste they spot at sea or washed up on beaches or other areas of coastline.
It is available for Android and iPhone and can be downloaded here.
Community event
Marius Suteu was joined at the community event by his Eyesea colleague Cath Robertshaw who is the company’s Chief Operating Officer.
Cath said: “We are delighted with the community interest that this evening generated, and the level of engagement, enthusiasm and knowledge about the subject of environmental pollution from everyone who attended.
“Our app is a great tool for anyone who wants to play their part in tackling local and global marine and coastal pollution.
Cath Robertshaw, Chief Operating Officer, Eyesea
“There were lots of great questions about our app which have given us some useful food for thought – so we will consider this feedback as part of our ongoing development process.”
Strong connections
The Eyesea team have strong connections with the Isle of Man, and their app is already playing a part in helping to clean-up the Island’s beaches.
Even during a testing phase of the app in 2021 it proved to be very effective in identifying areas where plastic waste and other debris was washed up following severe storms.
