A former Minister has criticised this years’ Manx budget saying that the Isle of Man’s competitive edge is being eroded.
Geoffrey Boot was the MHK for Glenfaba, latterly Glanfaba & Peel, from 2015 to 2021.
During this time he was appointed as Minister for the Department of Environment, Food & Agriculture (DEFA).
Mr Boot who lost his seat in the 2021 general election, posted on his social media platform saying “there are some important things going on that bear comment and scrutiny”.
Mr Boot highlighted that that unless you earn over £75,000, there is no point in moving to the Isle of Man as you will be worse off than if you lived in the UK.
He went on to say that in addition to the financial penalty of moving to the island, there is the extra hassle that island life brings with the increased costs of living and the cost of travel.
MHK Faragher ‘out of touch with economic reality’
Mr Boot also hit out at Douglas MHK and Labour Party Leader Joney Faragher, saying she was “out of touch with economic reality”.
In his post Mr Boot said, “One MHK commented that income tax hadn’t risen for many years – J Faragher – her statement is out of touch with economic reality. As inflation occurs and salaries rise, of course the income tax take rises too. With the recent bout of inflation and the salary rises that follow tax receipts will automatically rise.
“If income tax isn’t sacrosanct what next? That, I am afraid, is what a lot of residents and businesses are thinking.”
Regime change: Talent pool is ‘shallow’
The Islands Chamber of Commerce declared a vote of no confidence in the Manx Budget. The trade body also stated that the Manx Government is “in denial” – Read more here.
With businesses and residents criticising the Budget, one local man has started a petition to oust the Government, citing the Manx Budget as the catalyst to his campaign.
So far the petition has reached over 1400 signatures.
Mr Boot also didn’t hold back at what he thought about a potential change in the regime running the Island.
Boot said, “As for the regime change, that would be all well and good but from where I am sitting the talent pool looks very shallow!”
Climate Change money better spent elsewhere
The former Environment Minister didn’t hold back about the Manx Governments’ Net Zero fantasies either.
He said that the plans to spend millions of pounds on climate change would be better spend on essential services.
Mr Boot questioned why it was justified spending this money and loading additional costs on to residents (such as banning gas and oil boilers) when the Island produces less than 0.001% of total world output of CO2.
Mr Boot posted, “Whilst we all want to live in a clean world, in that respect the Isle of Man plays its part, but government plans to spend millions on climate change amelioration, when as an Island we produce just 700,000 tons of CO2 a year, less than 0.001% of total world output.
“Adding additional costs that are being loaded onto residents directly and indirectly with changes to boiler installation, insulation etc would this money be better spent on other essential services.
“Climate change is a reputational thing we are told, yet from where I am sitting at the moment and talking to people in the last 15 countries we have travelled to, the only thing they know about the Isle of Man, and that’s even if they know about the Isle of Man, is the TT races.
“There is the odd comment about us being un off [sic] shore financial centre, but that comes a big second.”

Boot added: “It seems that no one knows a hoot about our biosphere status. It’s a pity we didn’t apply to become a World Heritage Site – now that is a tourist draw. As for what we are doing to ameliorate climate change, there is not a mention.
“It’s time we got real on the Island, we are not about to save the world!”

Isle of Man – Less attractive place
Mr Boot went on to highlight which Ministers were pressing for even more strident climate change and Net Zero targets.
“The trouble with the present administration is that many of the Ministers, including Lawrie Hooper, Clare Barber and Daphne Caine, called for net zero by 2030 when the Climate Change Bill went through.
“Fortunately that was avoided, but some of the measures are already starting to bite such as the ban on fossil fuel boilers and its going to get worse.
“All this costs us as residents money and makes us a less attractive place for people to come and work.”
