Proposals set out to prevent another Shoprite surprise are to be debated by politicians later this month.
The government was infamously surprised when Shoprite announced it was being sold to Tesco in September 2023.
Under the proposed new rules, the Office of Fair Trading would have to be informed of a similar future merger.
It would not mean that the merger could be stopped, but could ensure any such merger that could have a large impact on market share could be better considered.
