Sir William Hillary Commemoration

Sir William Hillary Portrait – RNLI Collections

The annual Service of Commemoration for RNLI founder Sir William Hillary will be held this weekend.

All are welcome to the service in St Georges Church in Douglas, starting at 3pm.

The service is held every January marking the month he was born (January 4 1771) and died (January 4 1847) in.

With the RNLI celebrating its 200th birthday last year, the role the island played in his establishing the world renowned volunteer service was given greater precedence than in previous years.

Sunday will also mark one of the more poignant distress calls the island’s RNLI volunteers have faced this century when Chief Minister Alf Cannan marks the 25th anniversary of the sinking of the Solway Harvester.

Seven Scottish fishermen died when the ship capsized in Manx waters.
