There government is not currently developing plans for an e-wallet, but is keeping its options open.
Chief Minister Alf Cannan was asked about an implementation by Jason Moorhouse (Arbory, Castletown and Malew) in Keys.
Mr Cannan said that the government “must keep our technology options open and under review”.
The Chief added that if a “clear case emerges to create a government e-wallet, then we need to follow that through”.
After further questions Mr Cannan said he would be in favour of an e-wallet if it could be provided to provide efficiencies that would benefit across government.
An e-wallet would allow islanders to have government-issued documents, for example a digital driver’s licence, on their phone in a similar way that Apple Pay works or that many football clubs in the UK now issue tickets.
In the UK it has been suggested that everything from age verification to veteran cards and staff passes could be held in the e-wallet to provide an easier way of storing and accessing key information when needed.
