Onchan MHK Julie Edge has put forward sweeping reforms for the Legislative Council.
The Council is considered the second least trusted part of the Manx political set up, behind CoMin, according to the latest social attitudes survey.
Ms Edge’s proposal would see both the role of MLCs and the method of their selection reformed.
She is arguing that MLCs should not serve in departments and that candidates should not be proposed unless they have the support of at least 20 members of the public.
Ms Edge also believes that candidates should be required to declare their interests before the election takes place, that no part of the process for filling vacancies on rotation should take place until after the terms of office of the outgoing MLCs have expired; and that no-one should be able to serve more than two terms as an MLC.
Ms Edge’ motion also calls for Tynwald to require serving MLC’s to step down before seeking election to the House of Keys.
That final recommendation followed criticism of Jane Poole-Wilson and Kate Lord-Brennan who both stood for the Keys in 2021 while being sitting members of LegCo.
Ms Edge will ask Tynwald to support her recommendations during next month’s sitting.
