You Can Stand For More Than One Authority

While candidates cannot stand in multiple wards of the same local authority, there are no restrictions on standing across different local authorities.

Minister for the Cabinet Office was asked about the issued by Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas.

Mr Ashford stated: “Regulation 13 of the Elections (Local Authorities) Regulations 2022 requires a candidate validly nominated in more than one ward or district within a particular local authority to withdraw from all but one.”

He added: “Neither the Elections (Keys and Local Authorities) Act 2020 nor the 2022 Regulations expressly prohibit a candidate standing in more than one local authority.”

He said that he had asked for this matter to be considered when the regulations are next reviewed.

This comes as a handful of local authorities prepare for upcoming elections with the vast majority of boards elected unopposed.
