Douglas Council says its controversial plan to open a compound on a recreational ground in Willaston is the best way to minimise disruption.
It wants to place the contractor’s facility on the grassy area as part of its £40m upgrade of 700 homes in the estate, but has faced local opposition.
The site, off Ballanard Road and Barrule Road, is intended to reduce construction traffic in residential streets.
A council spokesperson said: “This refurbishment initiative is more than a construction project—it is an essential investment in the future of Willaston and the surrounding community.”
While part of the playing field will be temporarily used, the council says a “substantial area of open space will remain accessible,” with pathways staying open.
The compound will operate during normal working hours, and noise is expected to be “minimal.”
The spokesperson acknowledged “some disruption is unavoidable” but called the move a “proportionate and necessary step” in delivering a “once-in-a-generation upgrade.”
Residents have been told the compound will be removed after the five-year project, with the land fully restored.
Safety measures include protecting tree roots and using low-level lighting. Some storm-damaged trees will be replaced with “more suitable deep-rooted species.”
