The Isle of Man will welcome some of Britain’s leading conservation-focused farmers this month as it hosts the Silver Lapwing Awards for the first time.
The two-day event, taking place on June 18 and 19, will celebrate outstanding environmental stewardship in farming, with finalists, judges and guests gathering to recognise sustainable practices.
Much like Eurovision, tradition dictates that the winners host the following year, putting the Isle of Man in the spotlight to showcase its sustainable farming and UNESCO Biosphere credentials.
The Island’s hosting duties follow a landmark victory by local dairy farmers David and Rob Cooil in 2024 – the first Manx entrants, and winners, of the UK-wide award run by the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG).
Biodiversity
David and Rob, who run Ballagawne Farm in Ballabeg, operate a grass-based dairy system while prioritising soil health, habitats and biodiversity.
Their efforts earned them the 45th Silver Lapwing Trophy, with judges commending their environmentally friendly approach.
Clare Barber Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture, said: “Hosting the awards is a real opportunity to shine a light on the brilliant work being done by Manx farmers.
“David and Rob’s win was richly deserved – they’ve shown how farming can support nature, food security and climate resilience.”
This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony at Ballagawne Farm on Tuesday June 18, followed by farm visits, expert-led sessions and a showcase of Manx food, music and hospitality.
Paul and Hilary Fletcher of FWAG Isle of Man said: “David and Rob are a shining example of how Manx farmers care for the environment while producing food sustainably.
“Their success is now the Island’s opportunity to demonstrate how commercially viable agriculture can work hand in hand with nature.”
