Aalin Dairy has detailed an “unprecedented situation” leading to cancelled deliveries and halted production of some product lines.
The dairy cited a significant drop in milk production, initially caused by last summer’s dry spell which stunted grass growth.
This affected 40% of the herd, which the dairy said “will not recover until they calve again”.
Efforts to stabilise yields by housing the herd early and starting winter feed were underway, but a return to normal levels was disrupted by the loss of two high-yielding cows after calving.
One was recently put down following complications from a difficult birth that required a caesarean section.
Difficulties
Replenishing the herd has proven difficult. No cows are available for purchase on the island and imports from Great Britain are prohibited due to Blue Tongue virus.
The dairy is now exploring imports from Ireland, but the next available boat is not until December.
It said: “The yoghurt is out of production until our levels rise & butter production is on hold.
“The knock of effect from all this also comes at a financial cost. We please ask that invoices be settled within the 7-day timeframe. Thank you once again for your continued support through this difficult time.”
