The Infrastructure Minister has said that the public doesn’t notice when her department gets “it right”.
Speaking at the Government Conference, DoI Minister Dr Michelle Haywood made the comment when talking about the works her department have undertaken this summer.
During what felt like getting a told off by your headmaster in a school assembly, the Minister explained how quickly the public gets annoyed when there are roadworks and traffic lights, but don’t highlight when good work is done.

Minister Haywood said: “I always think that the Department of Infrastructure probably has an impact on everyone’s lives every day only.
“You don’t notice when we get it right. You notice when you’ve had to sit in traffic lights because we’re digging up the road, and you get cross with me, but you don’t notice when the road is nice and smooth and you fly along it.

“The people living there do, because they tell me about the speed on the road as you fly along it.
“But so we’re always caught between a rock and a hard place in this but we are committed to a significant annual spend, both within our revenue budget and our capital budgets, and this summer, we’ve done nearly 50 miles of road that been resurfaced.”
Haywood told the conference that 49.7 miles of road has been resurfaced this summer.
She also said that her department is looking into a smarter traffic light system which takes into account traffic volume.
