Isle of Man Academy Bested by Bowdon

An U15 Isle of Man Academy side made the trip to Bowden for the opening round of the Cheshire Cup, falling to a 40-14 defeat despite a valiant display of rugby.

The Manx side started the better in Saturday’s game (October 31), immediately looking to apply pressure to Bowden with a flurry of marauding carries inside opposition territory.

An early turnover allowed the hosts to clear their lines, only for a quick pass to release Taylor Kneen on the right hand side. The Sale Sharks Player Development Group inductee breezed past flailing Bowden defenders to give the islanders the early advantage. Jean Visser duly slotted the conversion to make it 7-0.

Bowden fought back well, crossing over themselves to reduce the deficit, but a failed conversion attempt ensured that the Isle of Man maintained their lead as the opening exchanges developed.

It was the visitors who’d strike next, capitalising on a well-drilled offensive structure which put the home team in real difficulty. Intelligent work at the breakdown saw the academy side advance quickly, making substantial gains and the Bowden defence struggled to organise themselves.

An incisive pass was met by Visser, who barrelled towards the corner, shrugging off a tackle before touching down to double his side’s score. He added the extras from the tee to make it 14-5 after 20 minutes.

Despite having chances to press their advantage further, the Manx team were placed on the back foot when their opposition’s attacking prowess emerged. Thanks to some aggressive running and disciplined shape, Bowden gained control and went into half-time leading 19-14.

Wholesale changes at the break saw the hosts introduce 12 interchanges, and the fresh legs paid dividends as the second period played out. The Manx outfit were unable top resist their new-look opponents, and were ultimately beaten 40-14 .

The fixture was characterised by some strong individual showings and collective promise, however, and the side wish to thank title sponsor Hartford Homes for their role in supporting the trip.
