MHKs to Keep Quiet Over Active Planning Applications

An Onchan MHK has criticised new standing order amendments that restrict MHKs from commenting on active planning applications.

The changes impose tighter limits on what members can say publicly.

Julie Edge MHK, who didn’t vote for the changes, says she will still publicly speak up on planning applications that are in the public domain.

Ms Edge said: “I believe in speaking up for my constituents, bringing forward your views, concerns, and questions.”

Concerns

Ms Edge questions “whose voices are being protected and whose are being restrained”.

She also queries whether the changes “represent genuine transparency, or a step towards limiting scrutiny and accountability”.

She added: “If we aren’t allowed to speak freely about planning applications in parliament where decisions on planning policy are made we risk silencing the very people we represent.”
