The Price of Putting a Fishy on a Dishy

Chippys are grappling with unprecedented pressures as the price of cod soars, prompting menu changes and price warnings.

Johnny McDowell, owner of New Cod on the Block in Onchan, says there has been a perfect storm of rising operational costs and stringent EU catching quotas.

“With EU catching quotas being cut dramatically to allow stocks to replenish the unfortunate fact is this is pushing prices to an all time high,” he said.

He revealed his business is now paying wholesale prices comparable to sirloin steak, a cost forecast to soon exceed beef.

“Suppliers are warning prices will be increasing again by the end of January with more increases likely during 2026,” he added.

In response, the shop is trialling hake as an alternative.

“It will be on our menus as a cheaper alternative by over £1 a fillet,” Johnny said.

Despite the challenges, he emphasised his commitment to value, noting a small cod meal remains under £9 for takeaway. He added: “We appreciate all our customers continued custom & support.”
