Caroline Whitehead and Paula Garrett faced one of their sternest examinations of the week in the Women’s Pairs sectional round, with Northern Ireland taking the match 2–0. The Manx pair described the contest as “tough” and at times “brutal,” acknowledging the quality and experience of their opponents, both of whom have competed at previous Commonwealth Games and World Championships.
Whitehead said the challenge was clear from the outset. Once behind, she explained, the dynamic of the game shifts. “You’re constantly changing… you’re not just bowling in, you’re trying to create extra shots to catch up, which makes it all the more difficult.”
Tactics
Despite the defeat, both players were keen to highlight the positives. Garrett said competing against players of that calibre is invaluable. “You learn from them — how they play, what their tactics are — and hopefully we can incorporate it into our game going forward.” She added that facing opponents of that standard sharpens focus and clarifies what is required to win matches at this level.
They also expressed gratitude for the support from home and in the stands. “Thank you for watching us and supporting us,” Whitehead said, noting the encouragement from friends, family and bowling supporters following the match on the live stream. Garrett echoed the sentiment, saying the backing has been “really appreciated.”
