Island residents are being urged to record their organ donation wishes following the birthday of Daniel Boyde.
It was the 15‑year‑old whose decision to donate his organs after his death in 2007 saved four lives and later inspired the island’s opt‑out system.
Daniel’s Law, which took effect on January 1, means most adults are considered willing donors unless they register otherwise, though families will still be consulted and have the final say.
Organ Donation
Since the awareness campaign launched, opt‑outs have risen by around 800 people, increasing from 1.67% to 2.98% of residents.
Minister for the Cabinet Office David Ashford MBE MHK said Daniel’s openness “changed the lives of four people” and encouraged the public to record their decision and discuss it with loved ones.
Decisions can be updated via the NHS Organ Donor Register, the NHS app or by calling 0300 123 23 23.
