Better Journeys Week returns to the island this month with a new theme urging islanders to rethink their daily travel: ‘Don’t just commute: CONNECT!’
The campaign, sponsored by Mourant, invites people to view their commute as more than a trip from A to B, instead using it as a chance to engage with their surroundings, their community and their own wellbeing.
This year also marks the first time the Isle of Man joins Guernsey and Jersey in a shared Crown Dependencies initiative promoting sustainable travel.
More Than a Commute
Organisers are encouraging the public to share their chosen mode of transport on social media throughout the week, whether walking with friends, cycling, taking the bus or trying something new.
Participants are also being urged to keep things light‑hearted, from scooting to even skipping to work.
Stepping away from traffic and parking stress can support both mental and physical health, with organisers highlighting that more mindful travel choices can help reduce congestion and improve air quality.
Jen Watson, Head of Responsible Business at Mourant, said commuting is often overlooked as a wellbeing opportunity. “What’s great about Better Journeys Week is that it encourages people to pause and see that time differently. Those everyday journeys can actually become something to look forward to.”
Committee member Brendon Kenny added that travelling by bike, bus or foot allows islanders to experience their surroundings in a way cars cannot. “Better Journeys Week helps us engage with our environment rather than rushing past it.”
Better Journeys Week will run from May 18 to 22.
