Govt Publishes Plan to Cut Drug Related Harm

The government has published a new plan aimed at reducing the harm caused by illegal drugs, setting out current work and future steps to strengthen support for people affected by substance misuse.

Two reports have been released: an interim update on how agencies are already working together, and an action plan outlining the next phase of activity.

Both follow policy principles approved by Tynwald and focus on reducing harm, improving access to services and keeping communities safe.

The interim report details ongoing collaboration between government, the Constabulary, pharmacies, Public Health, Manx Care and third‑sector organisations.

Priotities

Alongside it, the Action and Implementation Plan sets out five priorities: reducing drug‑related harm, improving access to services, boosting education and awareness, prioritising treatment and support, and strengthening how information is gathered and used.

Director of Public Health Dr Matt Tyrer said drug‑related harm remained a complex challenge affecting individuals, families and communities.

He said the Island already had a strong foundation of services, and the plan provided a shared roadmap to build on that work and ensure future activity was guided by robust local intelligence.

The work has been developed jointly by Public Health, the Department of Home Affairs, Manx Care, the Isle of Man Constabulary, the Department of Education, Sport and Culture, and third‑sector partners.

A new multi‑agency group will oversee the next stage, reporting to the Community Safety Partnership and setting timeframes, measures of success and future reporting arrangements.
