The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service has issued a statement after this evenings blaze at their Castletown & Malew Fire and Ambulance Station.
The station which is opposite Ronaldsway Airport was hit by a serious fire this evening, leaving part of the building badly damaged and prompting a major turnout from crews across the south.
Fire In Appliance Bays
The automatic alarm sounded shortly after 5pm, alerting a staff member who was on site. They found a fire in the main appliance room which is the area that houses two of the station’s frontline engines. The staff member called for assistance.
Support stations mobilised immediately. At the height of the incident, nine fire appliances were committed, along with a turntable ladder, several support vehicles and a specialist unit from the Airport Fire & Rescue Service. Police and Ambulance Service teams also attended.
Two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Building Damage Under Assessment
The Fire & Rescue Service says the blaze caused substantial damage to part of the station. An assessment is now underway to determine how the incident will affect day‑to‑day operations.
Senior officers stressed that fire cover for Castletown, Malew and the airport remained in place throughout and will continue to be maintained.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Crews remain on scene tonight.
