With the election in full swing it’s difficult to look past the looming September 24 polling day.
However, it’s helpful to know what the successful candidates will be doing in their first few weeks.
All the new MHKs (including those who have served before) will be sworn in on September 29, and later that day the first sitting of the new House of Keys will be held. MHKs will elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the presiding officers.
Choosing the Chief Minister
MHKs who want to have a shot at becoming Chief Minister – who is elected by the House of Keys – will need to publish their policy proposals a week later, on October 6.
Formal nominations and voting will take place in the House of Keys the following Tuesday, October 13. Candidates will be expected to give speeches and answer questions ahead of the vote.
Once the Chief Minister has been elected and formally appointed by the Lieutenant Governor, the task of appointing ministers, department members and statutory board members will begin.
October 20 will see the first sitting of Tynwald Court and the next monthly sitting, November 17, will likely see the election of members to parliamentary committees.
