Island Retains Fairtrade Community Status

The Fairtrade Foundation has awarded the Isle of Man Fairtrade Community status for a further three years.

The Isle of Man Fairtrade Group applied for renewal earlier this summer, and the success of their application serves as testament to the island’s efforts to raise awareness of Fairtrade and it’s positive impact on small producers and farmers around the world for almost 30 years.

This continued recognition comes as Fairtrade Fortnight gets underway, running from September 21 to October 4, where communities, churches, schools, businesses and other groups help raise awareness of the Fairtrade movement.

Speaking on behalf of the Isle of Man Fairtrade Group, One World Centre Coordinator Wendy Shimmin said: “As the Fairtrade Foundation says, ‘every action taken on a local level adds to raising awareness of the issues of unfair trade and furthers the progress of workers rights, safer working conditions and fairer pay for farmers and workers globally.

“Buying and supporting Fairtrade is such an easy way for us to support the people who bring us some of our favourite foods – tea, coffee, cocoa and bananas among them – that we are unable to grow on the Isle of Man,” she added.
