Government says the appointment of a new Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister presents a “valuable opportunity to reset its relationship” with the farming sector.
It follows a vote of no confidence in DEFA’s senior leadership by the Manx National Farmers’ Union (MNFU) earlier today.
The government has committed to prioritising discussions with the MNFU as the new administration takes shape and a new DEFA Minister is appointed.
The commitment follows concerns raised by the union about the senior leadership of the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture and the support available to the agricultural sector.
In a statement to Manx.News, a government spokesperson said: “The formation of a new administration and the appointment of a new Minister provide a valuable opportunity to reset the relationship with the sector and establish constructive dialogue from the outset.
“The incoming Minister will engage with the MNFU, stakeholders and departmental officers before deciding whether changes are needed.”
The government has also confirmed that the Chief Minister, the newly appointed DEFA Minister, the government’s Chief Executive Officer and DEFA’s Chief Officer will meet representatives of the MNFU within 10 working days.
Officials are currently arranging the meeting with the union and its board.
