Thomas to be Questioned on Suicide Prevention Strategy

Chief Minister Chris Thomas will be questioned on the island’s suicide prevention strategy in the House of Keys this week.

Thomas will actually face the question in his capacity of Cabinet Office Minister, a role he took on for himself when announcing his cabinet.

Douglas East MHK Joney Faragher will ask him if he will “commit to a review of the Suicide Prevention Strategy”, with particular reference to the “rollout of a fully resourced and connected Suspected Suicide Rapid Response Team”.

Earlier this year, Public Health reported that the island’s Suicide Prevention Strategy had moved into a “functional delivery phase”.

Protest

Last month, mental health campaign group ManxPACT called for greater government action on suicide prevention. It also staged a public protest outside Tynwald to raise awarness of mental health issues.

Faragher has two other questions tabled for answer at the November 3 sitting of the House of Keys.

She will ask Thomas, again in his role as Cabinet Office Minister, how the government plans to translate the findings and recommendations of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessments on Adverse Childhold Experienes and Ageing Well, into “specific policy actions, service provision and resource allocation”.

And Faragher will ask Health Minister Claire Christian how she intends to “strengthen the Crisis Support Team”.
