A period of rain will arrive early this morning, persistent and heavy at times, before clearing early in the evening.
Fresh southerly winds at first will increase to become gale force around midday, then severe gale force during the evening, giving gusts of 60-70mph overnight into Sunday, causing some damage and disruption to travel.
And we have three different weather warnings.
Amber warning for severe gales, 6pm Saturday to 3pm Sunday:
A deep area of low pressure (Storm Boelo) will track to the north of Scotland during Saturday, bringing gale to severe gale force winds across the island Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday. The southerly gale force wind will veer to the west or southwest and increase to severe gale force by Saturday evening, giving gusts overnight into Sunday of 60-70mph quite widely across the island.
This means a risk of damage, especially to trees which currently remain in full leaf, as well as disruption to travel. The winds remain severe gale force for a prolonged period of time and only slowly start to decrease during Sunday before a more significant decrease occurs overnight into Monday.
Yellow warning for rain, 10am-5pm:
A period of rain associated with Storm Boelo will arrive this morning, continue through the afternoon before easing off in the evening. Rainfall amounts are expected to range between 20-30mm across an eight -hour period, with a risk that up 20mm could fall in just six hours with a shorter, sharper downpour of rain. This means a flooding risk, although hopefully only minor.
Amber warning for coastal overtopping: 9pm tonight until 12.30pm Sunday.
Due to Storm Boelo bringing severe gale force west to south-westerly winds coupled high tides, large waves will cause significant overtopping ontol coastal roads and promenades for a couple of hours around the time of high tide on Saturday night (about 11pm) and Sunday morning (10.30am).
The areas most at risk are Fenella Beach in Peel, the Castletown end of Shore Road, Rushen, and Castletown promenade.
