Honey, I’ve Shrunk the Baggage!

A Manx honey business says jars of its 100ml tourist‑gift honey are being wrongly confiscated at Isle of Man Airport.

This is despite the jars being designed to meet CAA cabin‑bag liquid rules.

Honey Mann, a small local producer operating within the island’s UNESCO Biosphere project, says some passengers have had compliant jars taken at security even when they were correctly packed in a liquids bag.

The issue appears to stem from confusion over labelling: the jars show 140g and 100ml, but 140g of pure honey has a volume of 98.6ml because it is denser than water.

Some security staff have reportedly treated the items as non‑compliant and asked passengers to “voluntarily surrender” them, meaning no record is kept and the items cannot be traced.

The business says it has met airport security and management and has been assured the matter will be resolved. Travellers are being asked to report any future incidents so the issue can be escalated.

Passengers challenged at security can request a supervisor, who will allow the jar through if it fits within the permitted liquids bag.
