Reigning league champions Peel will face off against FA Cup-winning Corinthians in the traditional curtain-raiser at the Bowl tomorrow (August 21), with kick-off set for 7pm.
Both sides have the chance to begin their respective campaigns by lifting silverware at the first opportunity, in what promises to be a fierce opening gambit of the 2026-27 season.
The fixture is a repeat of last season’s Railway Cup final, which saw the Douglas side narrowly defeat Peel in a cagey contest on Boxing Day thanks to a second half strike from Josh Ridings.
Tale Of The Tape
There’s no shortage of history between the two sides, with both having spent recent years battling at the business end of both the Canada Life Premier League and domestic cup competitions.
They met four times across the course of the campaign last year; Corinthians had the marginally better record, beating the Westerners on two occasions, with Peel scoring victory once and honours shared in the remaining contest.
Peel ultimately ran out convincing winners in the league, securing a record 32nd top flight triumph, with a 5-0 drubbing of the Ballafletcher side proving decisive in ensuring that the title remained at Douglas Road.
Corinthians, meanwhile, bagged cup bragging rights. An impressive hattrick consisting of the FA, Hospital and previously mentioned Railway Cups saw them dominate the knockout competitions and end the season with three trophies to Peel’s one.
One’s To Watch
Upfront Footy named no fewer than seven of the two sides players, plus now departed long-term Corinthians manager Ben Qualtrough, in their ‘Team of the Season’ last term. Clearly, this is a fixture that possesses quality in droves.
Peel’s serial goalscorer Tomas Brown was in scintillating form throughout the 2025/26 season, notching up 50 first team strikes on his way to scooping both the ‘Mens Player of the Year’ and ‘Golden Boot’ awards. Five of Brown’s half-century came against tomorrow evening’s opponents, and the 22-year-old is optimistic ahead of a fierce contest under the lights.
“We have a young side, nerves can creep in during the cup competitions and we’ve struggled,” he admitted.
“But we’re all a year older now, and every game last season was an opportunity to get better. We’re more experienced, and it (winning the league) stands us in good stead.”
Stalwart centre-back Sam Kennaugh and club captain Matthew Woods are also expected to bolster a formidable spine for the Westerners.
Corinthians aren’t short of firepower themselves, with former FC Isle of Man striker Sean Doyle, who scored the impressive opener in their Railway Cup triumph, likely to lead the line. The veteran forward says his squad are excited by the challenge, but wary of the threat their opponents pose.
“We’ve managed to build a mentality of treating every game the same. definitely helps when you know you’ve edged them in previous games, but we won’t forget the hammering we got from them in December which will keep us honest.
“It’ll be a good test to see where we are before the season. We’re playing the league champions, so that in itself is a good test,” he adds.
“We lost one game last year which cost us the grand slam. That speaks volumes of what we’re capable of on our day and hopefully we can see more success against Peel on Friday.”
The most pivotal component of the Ballafletcher squad may not be in the starting XI, but rather the dugout. The aforementioned Ben Qualtrough’s departure from the club after nine successful years at the helm has left big shoes to fill on the touchline, with Steve Burns getting the nod for the top job. He’ll be hoping to pick up where his predecessor left off at the first time of asking.
On the other side of the whitewash, summer signing Cameron Dudley, acquired from Rushen Utd, should add quality in the engine room. Meanwhile Matthew Quirk will surely look to capitalise on a solid campaign between the sticks.
