Antiques Road Trip Visits Island

The latest series of acclaimed BBC One stalwart ‘Antiques Road Trip’ saw old-timey experts Roo Irvine and Danny Sebastian go in search of a vintage bargain right here in the Isle of Man.

Episode six of the programme, which has been running for over 16 years, started with the show’s experts scouring Fortuna Antiques on Prospect Terrace for a steal.

A Homemaker cup and saucer and pine bedside table took Sebastian’s fancy, while a vintage Parisien magazine and German filing cabinet caught the eye of Irvine.

The next leg of their journey involved a detour North to take in the classic vehicles on display at the Isle of Man Motor Museum, including a spin in the smallest production vehicle ever made, the Peel P50.

A U-turn back to Ramsey brought Irvine to William Rand Antiques, while her travelling companion headed instead for Castaway Vintage in Port Erin. The former walked out with a shoal of art-deco fish and a decorative glass bowl, while Sebastian grabbed a Bang and Olufsen TV, and a Victorian fountain.

The pair reconvened in Peel for the last leg of their Manx mission, hunting for treasure at The Old Bonded Warehouse. Sebastian’s final purchase was a Gladstone bag, and Irvine took home a Cross pen and pencil, along with a Birmingham silver pot.

Throughout their whistle-stop tour, conversation spanned the islands rich history, from being the birthplace of motorsport in Britain, to the home of our unique feline friends.

At auction, the variety of Manx-bought goods all fetched a tidy profit, but the Victorian fountain was doubtlessly the star of the show. A slew of bids saw the ornate piece sell for a cool £420, a sum which will surely have had Danny at Castaway wishing he’d commanded more than the £80 he initially sold it for.

You can catch up with the pair’s island adventure on BBC IPlayer.
