And just like that, we are back in the realm of weather warnings and have our first named storm of the season, Storm Ashley.
She/he (Ashley is a gender neutral name so I don’t want to make any assumptions) is going to give us one day of nice weather to tie down the bins and trampolines before being a nuisance.
Thankfully, today (October 19) is forecast to be a fine day with sunny spells and moderate southwest winds, with maximum temperature 14°C.
Storm Ashley
BRACE, BRACE, BRACE FOR IMPACT, STORM ASHLEY INCOMING – that is tonight/tomorrow’s forecast.
Our hun Ash is due to hit the island tonight and will last until tomorrow night.
The wind will increase from tonight, then very windy tomorrow with gale force south or southeast winds these veering southwest later.
Rain will be heavy at first tomorrow, but will clear by late morning to leave sunny intervals.
We are also being warned of coastal overtopping will occur at high tide in the afternoon.
Dirty Deets and Rumour on Ash
We all love to yabber about the weather, and speculate how bad its going to be, so I’m going to add to that rumour mill (I have looked at forecasts for my game of Chinese whispers).
Some weather forecasters are predicting winds of 65mph over our wee isle – I’m going to take a calculated guess that its enough to kill a few trees, finish off several dodgy garden sheds and certainly disrupt some sailings.
Over the 24hour(ish) period from this evening to tomorrow we are forecast around 30mm of rain.
The good news is that the majority of the day will be dry and sunny, but very bloody windy.
Outlook
Monday (October 21) should be nice and sunny with a few scattered showers.
The wind will have calmed its t**s a bit and will be a W or SW 20-25 with gusts of 30-35.
However, there is still a risk of coastal overtopping and inner harbour flooding around high tide (~2:45pm & ~3:00am Tues).
The strong breeze will still be present on Tuesday (October 22), but there will be bright or sunny intervals and isolated showers.
The wind will be a W or SW 20-25, soon veering W 15-20, backing S or SW later.
Basically, batten down the hatches today and have a well earned rest day tomorrow.
