Islanders are being asked not to handle sick or dead birds following a number of confirmed bird flu outbreaks in the North West of England.
The virus, also known as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), was detected on three separate commercial poultry farms in Cumbria and Cheshire last week, leading to birds being culled and protection zones put in place.
Bird flu is primarily spread by infected wild birds coming into contact with kept birds.
While no cases in kept birds have been reported in the Isle of Man since August 2022, the risk level is considered the same as in the UK.

Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Amy Beckett said: “Bird keepers should remain vigilant and take action to protect their birds due to the increased risk.
“The virus, which affects poultry and wild birds, usually flares up in autumn and fades in warmer months. As it’s primarily a disease of birds, the risk to human health is very low.”
DEFA strongly advises that keepers minimise the number of people who come into contact with their birds and regularly disinfect boots and equipment.
Birds should be housed where possible to reduce contact with wild birds, which should be kept away from all feed, water, and bedding.
