Lying ahead is arguably the best athletics weekend of the whole year on the Isle of Man.
With 720 entries for the Easter Festival and a further 369 for the Manx Mountain Marathon and Half Marathon.
It really is a massive weekend for the sport of athletics, and with so many organisers, marshals and other helpers involved it’s a real team effort to get the events staged in such a professional manner.
Many hundreds of the entrants are visitors who will significantly swell the tourism coffers of the Isle of Man over the weekend.
Athletics Weekend
At least one competitor is entered for both events.
Will Bowers from Cambridge University was speculating last year about how he could combine both events (i.e. all three Festival races and the Mountain Marathon), and with both the Mountain Marathon and the Peel Hill Race taking place on Saturday it will be interesting to see if and how he finds a way to do both.
Both events share a common theme of attracting competitors of all standards, from relative novices to high-class international athletes, and that is the case once again this year.
The Mountain Marathon entry contains winners of prestigious events such as the Spine Race and the Dragon’s Back race, while the Easter Festival boasts a competitor who was a World Mountain Running Champion in the women’s U20 age group in 2023, who was also the leading Great Britain finisher at the World Cross-Country Championships the same year.
Opportunity For Locals
It’s a fantastic opportunity for our local competitors to line up in big fields where they will have runners of similar standards to race against, and with that fantastic atmosphere of fun and camaraderie which always accompanies the competitive racing.
The weather forecast is currently a bit mixed – it looks like the Festival 10km race in Port Erin on Friday evening may be wet, but Saturday and Sunday are looking much better.
