An MHK has raised doubts that the Police will be able to properly monitor the proposed new speed limits.
The DoI is working on plans to introduce new 20mph speed limits across many of the island’s towns and villages.
In Tynwald this week, Chris Thomas asked the Home Affairs Minister Jane Poole-Wilson about how the Police had been consulted and said the public needed to know the limits won’t be policed.
Mrs Poole-Wilson said that the Police had been consulted through officers delegated to do so by Russ Foster.
Enough Coppers?
Mr Thomas said: “Is the Minister prepared to say today whether the Chief Constable thinks or through the officers to whom he’s delegated this mandate to be consulted, does he believe that the public should know that there can’t be any extra enforcement of the new speed limit any more than there is at the moment?”
Mrs Poole-Wilson said that Mr Thomas was correct in that the Constabulary has a “finite resource” and it is up to the police as to how that resource is deployed.
She added: “What I do understand from decision making is that the police will target enforcement activity on an intelligence led basis and around drivers who present the greatest risk of harm and also areas that are inherent or situational risk.”
The Minister added that if road users stick to speed limits then the public in effect “self-police”.
