The Chief Minister has told Keys that not all roads included in DoI proposals for 20mph limits will see changes.
Alf Cannan was speaking during a debate on a motion by Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas, which called for further scrutiny of speed limit reductions.
The chief Minister said that the DoI has indicated that the proposed 20mph zones will be targeted where it is deemed appropriate.
He said: “I have personally sought and received assurances from the minister, from the minister and the Department of Infrastructure, that no further signage or poles will be erected until the ongoing consultation process has been fully completed.
“Furthermore, that no action will be taken without proper engagement with local representatives and relevant stakeholders, and that not all the roads published, shown on the published map will become 20 mile an hour roads. The map represents a starting point for discussion, not a final decision.”
He also acknowledged concerns but emphasised road safety as a priority. Adding that the DoI will consult with local authorities and residents before finalising any changes.
Flexibility
Mr Cannan said the plans, which were set down by Tynwald, are not “without flexibility”.
The debate follows public concerns over widespread 20mph proposals, with critics warning of potential congestion.
However, Mr Cannan stressed the government’s focus on safety. “The ultimate aim is to protect vulnerable road users, particularly in residential and high-footfall areas,” he said.
