Chief Warns of Rising Financial Crime Threats

The Chief Minister told more than 500 delegates at the Villa Marina that the Isle of Man must remain a “strong link in the chain” of nations tackling increasingly sophisticated international financial crime.

Opening the Countering Financial Crime Conference, Alfred Cannan MHK said the island would continue to pursue economic growth while acting decisively against those seeking to exploit its financial systems.

He warned that organised networks now operate across borders with advanced technology, posing risks to national security and economic stability.

Speakers throughout the day include senior figures from the Isle of Man Financial Services Authority, the National Crime Agency, HMRC, the US Treasury and international governance bodies.

Topics range from MONEYVAL evaluations and cybercrime operations to whistleblowing reward schemes and illicit finance in offshore territories.

The event aims to strengthen the island’s defences through collaboration and knowledge‑sharing.
