Concern that Channel Island Could Own MT

Lawrie Hooper MHK

Lawrie Hooper has expressed his surprise at the news that a company owned by the Jersey government could buy Manx Telecom.

Yesterday it was reported that MT is in talks with the parent company of Jersey Telecom, the JT Group with regards a sale.

The JT Group, which is wholly owned by the Jersey government, has not confirmed it is in talks to buy MT, nor has the company, but it did tell Manx Radio that “background discussions” are ongoing.

Mr Hooper said: “I’m not sure it’s sensible to allow our main telecoms provider to be owned by a foreign government.

“Why would IOM Gov not be interested in purchasing a profitable entity that provides critical national infrastructure?”

Inappropriate

Yesterday a government spokesperson said: “It would be inappropriate to provide a specific comment on any individual business which may, or may not, be going through a commercial transaction until such time as any such transaction is confirmed publicly.”
