Council to Improve Douglas’ Playgrounds

Douglas City Council has named the eight play areas where it will carry out improvements.

The Regeneration and Community Committee has outlined its proposals to make them safer, more inclusive and better maintained. It is part of a five-year Play Area Action Plan.

The sites are at: Westmoreland Road, Governor’s Hill, Centenary Gardens, Cooil Road/Ballavagher, Reayrt y Sheear, Pulrose, Anagh Coar and Noble’s Park.

Westmoreland Road has been selected as the first site to undergo redevelopment. The next steps will involve the development of detailed project briefs, budget estimates and timescales for each location.

The scheme follows feedback from children, parents and other island residents, which the council says helped shape a feasibility study and the planned improvements.

Suggestions included improved seating and social areas, enhanced landscaping and greenery, an upgraded Multi-Use Games Area, outdoor games facilities and the potential introduction of a scooter pump track.

Playgrounds Important Part of the Community

Councillor Natalie Byron-Teare is chair of the Regeneration and Community Committee.

She said: “This plan is about making sure every child in Douglas can enjoy access to safe, high-quality play facilities, wherever they live.

“Our playgrounds are an important part of community life and investing in them is an investment in the health, happiness and wellbeing of our residents.”

She added: “As custodians of these important community assets, we are incredibly proud of our parks and green spaces across the capital.

“Our Parks Services team carries out regular inspections of all play areas and equipment, ensuring that any necessary repairs are dealt with promptly.”
